Superman Returns - the book
« on: July 10, 2006, 06:19:39 AM » by Miraenda
Hey all, Well, I thought I would be funny and do a review for a book based on a movie with my movie forum not having any new reviews for the actual movies for awhile I read the book Superman Returns by Marv Wolfman. This guy should write the X-men books too, since Wolfman makes me think of Wolverine, but I digress. I purchased this book in Barnes and Noble, a store I should not be allowed to step inside for fear of buying too many books. The story of the book follows not very closely that of the movie at the beginning. The movie has a cheesy beginning where we see a bunch of planets in outerspace amidst the Superman music. While watching it, I felt transported to the 70s as if I were watching Star Wars instead of Superman, which I doubt is the effect they wanted to embed on audience members. The book's beginning instead gives details that are helpful in understanding Superman's journey back to Krypton and his disappearance from Earth for 5 years. The rest of the book coincides well with the movie. The movie is actually better for containing some juicy tidbits on Louis Lane's child, details wholly absent in the book. My recommendation would be to go see the movie itself rather than to read the book. Although the book is decent, the movie is better in this genre to give the action and visual details that help to bring the story to life. Sometimes a picture is worth much more than a thousand book words. Book rating = decent

This is better than the movie because it does not establish that the kid is Superman's son, it is Lois' husband. Unfortunately, this forces Lois to be the killer of her brute assailant using leverage. This unabridged version gives all the characters back story, even the ones you already know all of their back story. It retreads the same ground for those just starting to follow this franchise, so there, it drags. It gives Luthor proper due. It's revealed he was the one who baited Superman to go in search of Krypton where he was supposed to die. Good audio, great for long car trips. Regards T. Price Oppapers.com
