I have to admit that I'm not sure what makes this song so appealing to me. The video and song together have a somewhat hypnotic quality. I was born in 1973, so that's what prompted me to even listen to it (never had a song named after my birth year haha).
What is weird about the song is that a) it reminds me musically at the beginning especially of the Bee Gees songs, b) he kinda sounds like Barry Gibb in his tone range.
The song is not really deep either, but yet I like it a lot. Oh, I should mention that I hate the Bee Gees and, thus, that's what it's weird I'd enjoy it at all.
As a final note, I have an issue with some of the songs James Blunt does because he tends to mention alcohol or drugs a lot, which seems to me to encourage people to use them or make them appear appealing. Kids don't need to be encouraged to do alcohol or drugs, but so many singers seem to romanticize them, I guess he isn't the first. It downgrades his music in my estimation, though.
