gri,

Why do you not just enable the following:

2) Profile -> Notifications and Email ->
[ on ] "Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic."

It seems that if you are wanting to be notified of replies that you have posted in a topic, then just check mark that to turn that back on. What would be the reason that you would leave that "off" and yet always have to click the "Notify of Replies"?

Maybe that's why nobody else is encountering or seeing your problem, because normally people either want to be notified or they don't.

But anyway, I had that "off" from last night's testing, yet I had still received notification via email that you posted here, due to I had clicked the "Notify of Replies" for the testing above, so it seems to be working for me, what you are saying doesn't work for you  ?

6) Once I ~Quick replied~.

Surprising.. there will be no more notifications
as if the topic has been locked by [Unknown].

Do you think maybe you just had a delay in receiving your email that particular time? I get that happening sometimes. I even sometimes do not receive email notifications when I know someone has posted on a phpbb forum, so for whatever reasons, sometimes there are quirks to every script.

It could very well be a quirk in SMF with what you are referring to, because when I did do the test the first time, I did not receive the notification either, as you had mentioned, however I received it on the last test.

11) What conditions are needed to fix the errors ?

Can really Locking and Removing of the topics
help to test and fix the errors which reveal itself
only after obligatory reply to a topic ?

Yes it can.

In any case the sequential Locking and Removing of my topics
during the last year
by almost all of moderators at simplemachines.org forum
about several rough logical errors
have resulted in improvements.

There tens of such Removed topics of mine
and no doubt of other users as well.

The Locking of the topic
"The error of not fixing an error in smf_1-0-3_UPGRADE"
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=35881.0
(before its removing under the predext of nonsense)

proves that the developers have understood the error
and have agreed to it.

But isn't it possible to fix the errors without
Locking, Removing and Ban Threat ?

What other popular SMF forums
with thousands of users do you know
where precaution topics are not accessible
to the simplemachines.org moderators ?

P.S.
Added: Locked by simplemachines.org moderator.

It seems that if you are wanting to be notified of replies that you have posted in a topic,
Leigh, modify this to:
"It seems that if you are wanting to be notified of replies that anybody else have posted in a topic,"

Why do you not just enable the following:

2) Profile -> Notifications and Email ->
[ on ] "Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic."
We discuss a set of settings which produce
the revealing of the error.
Turning notification on when you post or reply to a topic
as a default
is a way to defend oneself from the consequence of the error
(the error will just not reveal itself).

But the desired default value can not always be
"Turn notification ON when you post or reply to a topic."

For example, I want..
NOT "Turn notification on when i post or reply to a topic."

It does not mean that I want
"Turn notification OFF when i post or reply to a topic."

"NOT turn notification ON" is not logically equal to
"Turn notification OFF".

I.e. this setting should not influence to the topic
which I have already subscribed to.
Really I could be just a reader and have already subscribed earlier.

"To READ" is not equal to "REPLY".

The notification ensures the READING process.

REPLY (neither quick nor full writing)
should not stop the READING process
and should not turn notification OFF.

"STOP NOTIFICATION" is a step which is independent from reply.
Just the switcher of the subscription
can be suggested in the form of reply.

The switcher is suggested in FULL reply form
(although may be hidden by the settings)
and is not suggested in Quick reply form.

Till now the error of the filling..
of the "Notify of replies" field in the Full reply form
(which is in "Additional options")
has been already fixed
and this field is exactly the current status of topic subscription
(in full reply it can be also changed by a user).

In QUICK REPLY form there is no switcher of the subscription

before the eyes,

but in spite of this

the invisible (hidden) field "Notify of replies"

continue switching the subscription to the topic

by its value at the moment of reply.

The error consists in the fact

that the hidden field "Notify of replies" in quick reply mode

is being always filled (except of smf_1-0-3_installed)

not by the current status of subscription,

but incorrectly by the value of Default setting from the profile.

In smf_1-0-3_installed only
quick reply mode has stopped turning off the notification.
It has began ~not to turn on~. It is correct.

~It is correct but I am afraid it was really fixed.. occasionally.~

The only moment when the Default value
"Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic" setting

should work

is when the program does not (and can not yet) know

the real defined current status of subscription,

i.e. when a user post or reply to a topic for the first time

AND has not yet subscribed as a reader ealier.

The user may mostly not subscribe to the topics
and almost always just quick reply to the topics
in order to never return to the topic
because he is not interested in others' replies.
In such a case there is a good reason
to leave the default value
[ ] "Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic" setting

switched off.

But if a user has once subscribed to the interested topic
his any replies should not turn off subscription.

Maybe that's why nobody else is encountering or seeing your problem,
because normally people either want to be notified or they don't.

There ARE people who see.
But the majority of the rest
can not understand their encountered problem
or can not see the danger of possible encountering

because the topics with the TRUTH

are being removed from the simplemachines.org forum

by moderators.

This is only the ullusion of occasional character of the error.
Really the error is constant.

It is necessary just to understand the idea

of ~Just follow the chief logic~

and follow carefully the words of instructions.

You have not yet confirmed your
1) Profile -> Look and Layout Preferences ->
"Use quick reply on topic display":  [show, on by default]

setting.

No. I know exactly that the subscription was turned off
after Quick reply.
It always happen in the conditions mentioned above.

I even sometimes do not receive email notifications
when I know someone has posted on a phpbb forum,
so for whatever reasons, sometimes there are quirks to every script.
The sources of the programs are often being stealed.
I know it living in Russia.

In such cases it is natural that the same errors
(both logical and misunderstanding)
are also turn out to be stealed.
It is a good proof of stealing.. although an indirect one.

It could very well be a quirk in SMF with what you are referring to,
because when I did do the test the first time,
I did not receive the notification either, as you had mentioned,
however I received it on the last test.

The subscription is being turned off due to error..
after Quick reply.. if the Default setting in the profile
has been set to "off" beforehand.

It is natural that
the subscription is not being turned "off"
if you Quick reply, then Subscribed,
then turned off the Default setting in the profile.
I hope it is not your case of testing.

Clicking the "Notify of replies" link of the topic
is enough to understand the current status of the subscription
looking at the prompt box
"Are you sure you wish to enable notification
of new replies for this topic ?" [OK] [Cancel].

It is not necessary to confirm "OK" then
if you want to preserve the turned off status -
it was turned off by the error.

Just click Cancel to cancel the manual subscription.
But be attentive here. There will no more notifications.
